Pick of the Day: 1955 Ford Thunderbird

“Angry bird” with a matching trailer

-

After the puzzle video game “Angry Birds” came out in 2009, it soared to the top of the Apple App Store. And in the history of the store, it holds a record for the most days at the top (275 days as number one). It is no wonder the phrase “angry bird” has become a pop-culture staple over the last decade and a half.

The Pick of the Day is a 1955 Ford Thunderbird listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Peoria, Arizona. (Click the link to view the listing)

“Angry bird needs a new nest,” the listing begins. “This modified Thunderbird won many local awards and several CTCI (Classic Thunderbird Club International) awards, the last being a Gold Medallion at Flagstaff, Arizona.”

The seller says that the sheet metal is mostly original, but the chassis has undergone a number of improvements. Among them are a modified frame, a Ford Mustang II front end with disc brakes, power steering, power rack and pinion steering, a four-link rear suspension, and adjustable coilovers. The exterior has a monochromatic white look to it with color-keyed bumpers, and the hardtop has been customized to look like a tan cloth soft top.

The interior of the cabin is also changed from its original form: The bench seat has been replaced by a pair of Chevrolet Camaro bucket seats, and features include a center console, a Bluetooth-compatible radio, Dakota gauges, an Ididit steering column, a Lecarra steering wheel, power windows, and more.

A bird with a raging temper should have a properly powerful engine. Momentum for this one comes from a 1998 Lincoln Mark VII-sourced 4.6-liter V8 combined with an automatic transmission. Upgrades include an aluminum radiator, an electric fan, and a custom exhaust system. That exhaust, by the way, is said to sound “angry,” just like the car’s ANRYBRD license plate proclaims.

By the way, the Classic Thunderbird Club International (CTCI) which awarded this Thunderbird a trophy is still a thriving organization today. Its first newsletter (dubbed EarlyBird) was launched in early 1963, and the club has been around for over 60 years. According to the club’s website, there are over 5,000 members and 100 chapters worldwide. The website says, “Members continue to gather all over the world to prove that the classic Thunderbird was surely one of Ford’s better ideas!”

But wait, there’s more! The car comes with a matching Can-Am trailer that is lockable and can reportedly handle speeds up to 80 mph.

The asking price for this complete package deal is $86,000. The purchase might help with your anger-management issues.
