Tim McGraw’s 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Could Be Yours on November 4

If you are an Oldsmobile fan or have ever wanted to own a vehicle with celebrity provenance, you are in luck. Singer and songwriter Tim McGraw is well-known in the country music industry, but you may not know that he is also a collector car owner. A special 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass convertible was custom-built by Chip Foose for Tim’s 40^th birthday in 2007. Now, 16 years later, that car is going up for grabs.

Coming soon to the collector-car marketplace is an event hosted by GAA (short for Greensboro Auto Auctions), based in Greensboro, North Carolina. GAA will turn up the microphones and turn on the spotlights from November 2 through 4, 2023 to showcase (and sell) some of your favorite classic models. There will be about 695 vehicles (along with plenty of memorabilia) sold across the three days. GAA is a unique auction in the sense that the location is consistently held at a dedicated facility called the Automobile Palace. Accommodation there are generous, with available skybox seating for 125 VIP guests. GAA hosts three auctions each year, taking place in February, July, and November.

A one-off car that will cross the auction block at the November event is McGraw’s 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass convertible. It will be sold on Saturday, November 4 as Lot #ST0072.5.

The third-generation Cutlass is an enthusiast favorite, and for good reason. This car rode on the General Motors A-body platform, and it rolled out in 1968 with fundamental architecture that was similar to the Chevrolet Chevelle and the Pontiac LeMans. For 1971, the hood, grille, headlights, and bumpers were restyled to the layout seen on today’s car. This Cutlass has backstory unlike any other, because it was custom-built by automobile designer Chip Foose and presented to McGraw in 2007.

Foose created a rolling work of art with this convertible: During restoration, it was refinished in striking two-tone burgundy and black. Footwork comes from a set of polished aluminum staggered 19-inch and 20-inch wheels (Foose-branded, of course), wrapped in Pirelli Z-rated low-profile tires all around.

The “Z06” badges on the front and rear are a subtle clue about the powertrain that puts this Cutlass into motion: Torque comes from a Chevrolet Corvette-sourced LS7 V8 engine that has been rated at 505 horsepower, and power is sent to the Currie nine-inch rear axle through a 4L60-E four-speed automatic transmission. With all that power on tap, it’s important to have adequate braking capability, and this car uses Baer six-piston big brakes to get that job done. The long list of upgrades continues to the chassis, where a custom Hotchkis suspension has been added for optimal handling.
