Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 1970 Volkswagen Type 2 Westfalia camper. Finished in two-tone blue and white, this factory VW conversion bus is powered by a 1.6L flat-four paired to a floor-mounted four-speed manual transmission. The interior can be configured for seating, dining and sleeping accommodations. This VW bus is offered by a private party with a clear Florida title in the seller’s name.
Volkswagen had three models of its Type 2 bus in the U.S.: Station Wagon, Kombi and Campmobile. The one presented here is the latter and was originally ordered with the optional pop-up fiberglass top and luggage rack by Westfalia—according to the owner, it has a new canopy rooftop with built-in screens. The Brilliant Blue and Cloud White exterior panels are complemented by white bumpers and VW logo on the nose. This example recently won first place at a classic car show.
New tires are mounted on steel 14-inch wheels with chrome VW-branded hubcaps. Four-wheel drum brakes handle the stopping duties. “A four-wheel independent suspension system lets each wheel handle bumps without making the other wheels bump along,” Volkswagen claimed in a brochure at the time.
Both front buckets and rear bench seats have been reupholstered in ivory and gray vinyl. The dashboard and front flooring are black, while the headliner has been redone in gloss woodgrain. The rear compartment, accessed via the passenger-side sliding door, is equipped with wood cabinetry, a retracting table, a sink, curtains and fold-out side windows. The rear cargo area contains a padded cushion, pillows and a spare tire shrouded by a gray vinyl cover.
The dashboard houses a 90-mph speedometer with an odometer reading 37K miles, though the true mileage on the chassis is unknown.
According to the seller, the rear-mounted 1.6-liter flat-4 is mechanically sound. As you’d expect, power is sent to the rear wheels via a floor-shifted 4-speed manual transaxle.
