A classic car club based in Joplin, Missouri, continued a growing annual tradition recently when it drove students in a school special education program to prom.
The tradition started six years ago when a special needs student, Cole Darby, asked his parents if he could drive their classic truck to the Joplin High School prom, reported KSNF/KODE-TV. Darby did not have his driver’s license, but his parents asked members of the Car Buddies car club if they’d be willing to help out.
They showed up and a tradition — the Annual Cole Darby Cruise to Prom — was born.
Video of this year’s event showed a long line of classics rolling into prom. There were some very nice-looking Camaros, Mustangs, trucks and even an old Sunbeam Alpine mixed in with a lot of vintage American cars.
Darby’s mother, Leann, helps coordinate the event each year. She said she’s touched every year by the amount of support the cruise gets.
“I tear up every year we do this,” she told a reporter.
