John DeLorean added an option package to the 1964 Pontiac Tempest and the Pontiac GTO was born. From a simple option package that bumped up the horsepower with a 389ci V8 the muscle car was born.
In the ensuing decades the formula for a muscle car has stayed consistent: two-door American car with room for four, and a V8 engine up front that sends power to the rear wheels. A simple concept that led to a segment of cars that are loud, fast and fun to drive.
With so many choices, what is your favorite muscle car?
Let us know in the comments section below what is your favorite muscle cars. Like my high school history always told me, “There are no wrong answers.”
(Editor’s note: For the sake of discussion lets include Pony Cars as Muscle Cars.)
My choice? 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454.
1)Corvette
Favorite muscle car: Pontiac GTO, 1964 to 1967.
My parents could not help with the then purchase price when I was in high school: 1964-1968.
Now I cannot afford a restored GTO. I still have good memories of street drag racing in Chicago.

I had a yellow 442 W-30, ram air, hurst duel gate shifter. That was the only car I’ve had that could burn rubber in 2nd gear and actually fish tail. Way too much fun for a 19 year old! Oh yea, and 5 mpg
Sorry it was a 1972
My favorite of all time is the 1977 Pontiac Trans Am; while it was nowhere near the most powerful or fastest, it was always my favorite. Its swoopy lines gave it a raptor-like look, it just looked mean. I loved everything about it! Smokey and the Bandit had a lot to do with it I guess; as a kid I grew up around Dodge Chargers because my Dad was a Mopar man back then; in fact my second favorite is the 1970 Dodge Charger R/T-SE with the 440 Sixpack. Neck and neck with the 70 is the 1969 R/T with the 426 Hemi. I saw a lot of Mopar and GM muscle cars but those three have always been my go-to dream cars. I came close once in high school, when I lucked up on a 75 Firebird with a 301 out of a 78 ‘Bird; it needed some work but I got it at a steal and I had big plans for it. Sadly, life got in the way. I still think about that car sometimes.
64 GTO will always be close to my heart. 66 Fairlane GT390 is a close 2nd, 70 Chevelle will always be in the mix. I currently drive a 72 Nova.
