Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 32k-Mile 1991 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Convertible 5-Speed.
You will be hard-pressed to find a third-generation Camaro more showroom-fresh than this Bright Red beauty. From top to bottom, inside and out, it has been preserved for 33 years in mostly original condition. It is now being offered by a private seller in Elgin, Illinois, and the auction ends Wednesday.
When the third-generation Camaro first came out in 1982, it was a revolutionary new platform: In particular, the windows pushed new design limits. The front windshield was raked at 62 degrees, and up until that point, General Motors had maintained an angle limit of 60 degrees. Clearly, engineers wanted this car to be as sleek as possible. Another thing that made this generation unique was that GM allowed ASC to make the car into a convertible. As you may recall, for the Camaro’s (prior) second-generation run from 1970 through 1981, a convertible did not exist. Today, we get to feast our eyes on a car that offers the top-down fun-factor as well as low mileage.
Speaking of the mileage, the CARFAX report for this car is particularly interesting. It shows accident-free ownership in several states as well as service along the way. But the mileage accrual pattern is what caught my eye: The car was driven about 30,000 miles in its first decade, then for the subsequent two decades it was driven very, very sparingly. Clearly, the owners saw this as a collector-grade example. The car still came out of hiding occasionally for service and registration renewals, which is a good thing.
Power comes from an LB9 Tuned Port Injected 305cid small-block V8 mated to a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The oil was changed in January 2023, and the alternator and cooling system also received attention in recent years. Included in the listing are a series of detailed videos that show the exterior, interior, and engine bay. I recommend checking out the start-up video because the car has a nice burble from the rear end, courtesy of an aftermarket exhaust system.
Would you stash this car away for another decade or two, or drive the wheels off it? I think I’d be tempted to go with the latter! Motor on!
