Car Puzzle: The Connection Among These Cars Is…?

Think you know your cars? Prove it!

-

Below are four cars that are for sale on AutoHunter and ClassicCars.com. They share something in common, but what is it?

I will admit that two have direct connections, while the other two are more indirect. Post your answer in the comments section below and, if you wish, feel free to identify the year and make of each. You can always click on each image to reveal the make/model/year.

Diego Rosenberg
Lead Writer Diego Rosenberg is a native of Wilmington, Delaware and Princeton, New Jersey, giving him plenty of exposure to the charms of Carlisle and Englishtown. Though his first love is Citroen, he fell for muscle cars after being seduced by 1950s finned flyers—in fact, he’s written two books on American muscle. But please don’t think there is a strong American bias because foreign weirdness is never far from his heart. With a penchant for underground music from the 1960-70s, Diego and his family reside in the Southwest.

  1. 55 Chevrolet two-door hardtop and 58 Chevrolet two-door hardtop
61 Ford Thunderbird with a tongue cover to make it a two-seater with two jump seats
64 Volvo 1800s, basically a two-seater with two jump seats

  2. The impala is a luxury version of a bel air (direct) and the thunderbird a luxury version of a sports car (indirect)? I’m terrible at this game.

  3. They’re all brilliant bleeding edge designs that I’d kill to own. But I’m stumped, sir. Please don’t leave me hangin’!

  4. Can’t even ID the teaser car, kinda looks like an Alfa or Mercedes but probably not, can’t be that simple. No guess on the common thread for the rest of them. Let us know soon, can’t sleep at night………..!

    • BINGO!

The side trim of the 1958 Impala and the design of the Volvo can be traced to the Ghia-bodied Fiat. The ’55 Chevy, not so much, but we know GM was influenced by Italian trands of the time and that’s where the wide grille came from. The T-bird’s taillights? Never read anything about the lineage, but they seem to be influenced by turbines too so why not?

  5. The designing of these cars was influenced by the porta Fina designs of the European cars of the time period ??? maybe ?? I know they say the ’55 has a similar style grill as the Ferrari. I’m running out of straws to grasp at !

  6. Jet Age influence, ’55 airplane hood ornament, ’58 has jet airplane styling running lights ect.. ’64 has airplane style cockpit and jet exhaust taillights. ’61 looks like an jet rocket.
