These first generation Camaros have been my favorite of the entire run since I was in high school. My best friend Jody had one, and I have fond memories of us ripping around in that car, often not following every traffic rule. Riding along and driving his 1968 Camaro coupe while listening to Dio and Ozzy at maximum volume are some of my happiest memories from that time.
This specific 1968 Camaro would be the ultimate way back machine for me. The New Braunfels, Texas, seller describes it as having power front disc brakes, power steering, an Edelbrock intake, a Kenwood audio system (key for listening to heavy metal at max volume), subframe connectors, and front and rear sway bars. The car is powered by a 350cid small-block V8 mated to a Muncie four-speed manual transmission and also features a 12-bolt rear end. The car is painted in light blue with white striping over a blue vinyl interior. The instruments have also been replaced with a modern Dakota Digital instrument set.
The car, just like my friend Jody’s, rides on Steel 15-inch wheels with chrome center caps and polished trim rings that are wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A raised-white-letter tires.
For the detail on the mechanicals, the seller states that the 350cid small-block V8 bears casting number 3970010 and has been upgraded with an Edelbrock intake, a Holley four-barrel 600cfm carburetor, an MSD ignition system, an HEI distributor, an aluminum radiator, and chrome valve covers. As stated above, the chassis and brakes have also been upgraded with power-assisted disc brakes up front and drums in the rear as well as front and rear sway bars and subframe connectors to complete the package.
No, this is not a restored car, but one that has received nice upgrades that improve the car and make it that much easier to drive in today’s traffic. If Jody and I had been able to make these mods to his car we definitely would have, as his was pretty stock and more than a bit tired after our hard use.
What this car is perfect for is vintage rally and tour events, local/regional shows, and might make a great car for an extended classic car road trip. If I were in the market for a first generation Camaro I would choose a car like this one as it is faster, handles better, and much more reliable than even a perfectly restored 1968 Z28 is likely to be. It is the easy button for classic car ownership, and I love the easy button as I would rather drive my classic than show it.
These early Camaros are part of what defined the 1960s pony car era and a nice example, such as this one, is great to drive and rat around in a bit. This is the perfect car to do this with and already has a lot of bids, so act fast!
