Pick of the Day: 1957 Cadillac Series 62

It’s good to be the King

-

Cadillac was the King of Style in the 1950s. It was THE aspirational brand in America yet envied around the world. A perfect example why is our Pick of the Day: a 1957 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a dealership in Tulsa. (Click the link to view the listing)

When Cadillac redesigned its 1948 series with aviation influence (not an uncommon thing after World War II), the brand could not have imagined how the “fin” would become the defining stylistic item of the ensuing decade. Not only did other companies copy the fin, but designers from around the world were also influenced by it. However, starting in 1957, Cadillac designers stepped away from the traditional “hump” and introduced “blade” fins for its mainstream models.

One year after the introduction of the fin, Cadillac introduced two landmark items: the high-compression engine, and hardtop styling. The latter Coupe de Ville was another very influential item that eventually became standard fare for Detroit and beyond. In the case of Cadillac, a slightly less luxurious Series 62 hardtop coupe was introduced in 1950 as a companion to the Coupe de Ville. It became Cadillac’s bread-and-butter hardtop coupe.

This particular 1957 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe features the standard 300-horsepower 365cid V8 paired with a four-speed Hydra-Matic Drive automatic transmission. According to the owner, “This beauty has been owned by the same family for 66 years, and it shows.” Painted in a very 1950s two-tone turquoise with matching vinyl and cloth interior, this Cadillac features “tasteful upgrades” that include a newer electric fan and radiator, power brakes booster and master cylinder, and more. “The car starts great, rides smooth, and is just waiting for a new forever home,” adds the seller. Options include aftermarket air conditioning and heater, upgraded AM/FM cassette stereo, and power steering.

When you cruise around in this 1957 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe, everyone will know you have “made it.” You may even have to change your name to “Jones” because you finally caught up with them. The cost to achieve that objective will be $55,000. Ready to catch up?

Lead Writer Diego Rosenberg is a native of Wilmington, Delaware and Princeton, New Jersey, giving him plenty of exposure to the charms of Carlisle and Englishtown. Though his first love is Citroen, he fell for muscle cars after being seduced by 1950s finned flyers—in fact, he’s written two books on American muscle. But please don’t think there is a strong American bias because foreign weirdness is never far from his heart. With a penchant for underground music from the 1960-70s, Diego and his family reside in the Southwest.
