AutoHunter Spotlight: 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback

One of the very best first time classic cars you can buy

-

People new to the collector car hobby often ask me what the best first time collector car is. If those people are interested in American cars, I always have the same answer, a Ford Mustang.

The reason for this is that the Mustang is great looking, fun to drive, universally loved, and one of the single best supported classic cars for parts and service. These are simple sporting GT cars that offer everything great about the collector car hobby in an attractive and easy to maintain package. Buy a great example of a Mustang and it might even be the only classic car you will ever want or need. The Mustang is just that good.

Of all the Mustangs ever built, I feel that the single best looking models are the 1964 1/2-1966 Fastbacks. My AutoHunter Spotlight is one of these cars, a 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback available now on AutoHunter, the online auction platform powered by ClassicCars.com

The seller describes this 1965 Mustang as equipped with a powerful 351ci V8 engine, mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. These cars originally ran with either inline 6-cylinder engines or one of a few 289 V8s, so this one with the 351 ought to haver ample power, likely more than any of the super expensive Shelby GT350 models. Notable features include a number of options I love including the Rally-Pac gauges, comfortable bucket seats with the Pony interior, a sport steering wheel with a wood rim, power steering, and a folding Sport Deck rear seat.

This Mustang had its color changed from the original Vintage Burgundy Metallic (Code X) to what they call a captivating Ivy Green exterior finish, complemented by a stylish Palomino vinyl interior. The seller emphasizes that all the body panels are original and not reproduction.

The details include that the car rides on a set of original style 14″ chrome styled steel wheels, which are paired with Arizonian United Edition radial tires. They also add that while this car is currently running an automatic transmission, it was originally equipped with a manual four-speed transmission, and the original clutch pedal and narrow brake pedal are still present. This is a bit odd but not a deal killer for me. It also means that if you want to swap out the automatic for a manual gearbox it is that much easier. In fact ,the seller is also including the original 4-speed gearbox and shifter assembly with the sale.

As stated above this Mustang is powered by what is described as a robust 351ci V8 engine, paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. The engine is equipped with aluminum valve covers, an aluminum intake manifold, a chrome air cleaner, an electronic ignition system, and a clean body-color engine bay. According to the seller, this Mustang has recently received servicing.

This is a Mustang that, while not stock, looks to be a car that you could enjoy for decades. The styling of the first series Mustang Fastback is to me some of the very greatest post-war automobile design. The color change also makes the car look terrific and this is one that I would happily pack in my own garage.

Bidding for this 1965 Mustang Fastback closes on Thursday, July 27, 2023 at 12:15 p.m. (PDT).
