AutoHunter Spotlight: 2009 Pontiac Solstice GXP

One of Pontiac’s final creations

-

Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 2009 Pontiac Solstice GXP.

The word “solstice” is derived from the Latin words for “sun” and “to stand still.” That’s because at precisely the moment of the summer solstice each year, the sun appears to pause in movement as it reverses direction. Specifically, this phenomenon took place on June 21, exactly a month ago today. The [Pontiac] Solstice in question for today’s focus, however, looks way too fun to allow it to sit still for very long. In fact, it demands to be driven.

This Mysterious Black Solstice is unique for a few different reasons. First of all, it has covered just 8,468 miles since new which is impressive for being a 14-year-old vehicle. Secondly, while most Solstice models were assembled as roadsters (thus the emphasis on “sun”), this one is a two-door coupe with a fixed roof (with a removable Targa top). According to the production data, this car is one of only 1,152 such vehicles for its model year.

The Pontiac brand was phased out of existence in 2010 after a longstanding history in American automotive culture. Known among many enthusiasts as a company that emphasized excitement and the joy of driving, the Solstice was a good fit for one of the final models that the brand ever produced. It was first launched at the 2004 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and went into production on the “Kappa” platform for model year 2006.

A high-performance “GXP” variant, as shown in today’s example, came out the following year with a 260-horsepower twin-scroll turbocharged Ecotec 2.0-liter inline-four powertrain. Additional enhancements included a limited-slip differential, anti-lock brakes, and a traction-control system. A five-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels on today’s car.

This garage-kept Solstice had about a $35,000 original retail price when new, and based on the mileage accrued (or lack thereof) along with the overall condition, it appears to have been collector-owned its entire life.

In case you missed seeing the summer solstice on June 21, now is your chance to acquire one that you can look at in the driveway every single day.

The auction for this 2009 Pontiac Solstice ends on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at 12:45 p.m. (PDT)
