AutoHunter Spotlight: 1963½ Ford Galaxie 500 XL

A handsome spring surprise

-

Ford started the 1963 model year with a handsome facelift of the previous year’s body but underneath it was mostly a carry-over year. That all changed when Ford introduced the sleek “Sports Hardtop” as well as the 427 V8.

One of these mid-year Fords, a 1963½ Ford Galaxie 500 XL, is currently featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com. The Galaxie was restored in 1991 and is equipped with a rebuilt 390ci V8 and Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. Features include power steering, power front disc brakes and air conditioning. Refinished in blue/green over a turquoise vinyl interior, this Galaxie 500 XL is available now from the selling dealer and comes with maintenance receipts, owner’s manual, shop manual and a clear title.

Originally finished in Corinthian White, the Galaxie’s body was restored and refinished in Ming Green in 1991. Optional dual side mirrors help navigate modern traffic safely.

The seats, center console, door panels and other trim are upholstered in turquoise vinyl; they are complemented by matching carpet and carpeted floor mats. Features include power steering, air conditioning and AM radio. The selling dealer states that a new American Autowire wiring harness has been installed.

A 120-mph speedometer, clock, and gauges for the fuel level and coolant temperature are mounted ahead of the driver. According to the selling dealer, all instrumentation works as it should, with the fuel gauge having been replaced. The odometer was reset to zero when the drivetrain was rebuilt and currently reads 23,812 miles, but the true mileage of this vehicle is unknown.

390cid V8

The seller states the 390ci reportedly is the one that originally came in the Galaxie, with both the V8 and the transmission having been rebuilt. Underhood features include chrome valve covers, body-color air cleaner and updated air conditioning compressor. A video of the car being road-tested can be seen on the AutoHunter auction page.
