Lamborghini has unveiled the lineup for its first factory Esports team. The trio will represent the Italian supercar manufacturer during the 2022 season in international sim racing competitions.
Lamborghini opted to have its own official team to expand the brand’s presence in the Esports segment.
“Now, after several decades of development in the industry, simulated racing is getting closer and closer to its real-life counterpart and now has nothing to envy from professional motorsport,” said Giorgio Sanna, Automobili Lamborghini’s head of motorsport.
“Moreover, sim racing is an additional tool for us to develop some of the fundamental aspects of real racing, such as car setups and software applications that will play an important role in the future of our brand.”
The three sim drivers chosen by Lamborghini to race in Esports competitions are Jordan Sherratt, Gianfranco Giglioli, and Giorgio Simonini.
Sherratt, who was born in South Africa in 1999, dominated the latest edition of The Real Race, winning 15 of 17 races and taking 9 of 10 pole positions.
Giglioli, a 24-year-old Italian-Venezuelan driver, finished eighth in the inaugural season of the Formula 1 Esports Series. In 2020 he finished fifth in the first edition of The Real Race and won the Porsche Esports Carrera Cup Italia.
Rounding out the lineup is Simonini, a 22-year-old Italian who won the Sim Grid World Cup 2020 and finished in fourth place in the SRO Esports 2020 championship.
Sherratt and Giglioli will compete in the GT World Challenge Esports Sprint Series Europe, Simonini will join the pair for the 2022 Intercontinental GT Challenge Esports Endurance Championship.
The Sprint calendar comprises five races. The last race of the season is set for August 3 at the virtual Monza racetrack. The Intercontinental GT Challenge Esports series starts on April 16 with the 12 Hours of Bathhurst. The 5 race season ends August 27 with the 9 Hours of Kyalami.
