The “French Collection” auction of more than 100 vehicles offered by Dakar racer Richard Romagny generated €2,060,136 ($2.3 million), Artcurial Motorcars reports of its online sale.
Romagny, former head of a French oil and energy company, drove in the Dakar Rally three times and became a passionate car collector after selling Forges et Mécaniques in 2006.
Topping the auction was a 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL that sold for $139,040. Other top sellers were a 1956 Peugeot 203 C cabriolet that brought $83,420 and a 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL that went for $76,470.
Several cars sold for auction-record prices, including a 1992 Citroen BX 165 that sold for $52,835.
All lots sold with one exception — the Dakar-raced 1998 Toyota Land Cruiser Prototype 1 that did not meet its reserve price in the bidding.
