MG returns to its roots later this month at the Shanghai Auto Show in China, where it will unveil the Cyberster, a 2-seat roadster that the company says was inspired by the classic MGB.
Inspired, perhaps, but this latest version has an electric powertrain that MG promises will offer a range of 800 kilometers (496 miles). In addition, the car will provide 5G connectivity while you travel.
“The Cyberster is a bold statement that looks strongly into MG’s future, touching on our heritage but more importantly building on our cutting edge technology and advanced design,” Carl Gotham, director of the SAIC advanced design studio in London, is quoted in the announcement. SAIC Motor, China’s largest automaker, owns the British brand MG.
“Sports cars are the lifeblood of the MG DNA and Cyberster is a hugely exciting concept for us.”
Among the car’s features are “Magic Eye” hidden headlamps that open when switched on, a “laser belt” LED strip down the side of the car, a two-stage shoulder line, and a “kamm” tail design with lamps and turn signals that reflect the car’s British heritage.
Expect a 0-62 sprint in less than 3 seconds, according to MG, whnich notes that it already offers a trio of plug-in vehicles in the UK — the ZS, MG5 and HS.
More details are to be shared at the Shanghai show, which is scheduled for April 21-28.

The headline says the Morris Garage electrified roadster is inspired by the MGB. The MGB was a part of my childhood and teenage years, and I fail to see any resemblance between the two. Kind of reminds me of Tron.
No – MB (of any form or vintage) is not what springs to mind seeing this.
And perhaps they should consider that with their history as it is to quality, performance, service, investability, etc….that they are better NOT aligning too closely with it!
Would be nice to hear of any pricing and distribution projections. And how are their existing EVs doing?
That car looks great.
Roots, really? Who”s kidding whom?
