Pick of the Day: Right-hand drive on this Japanese/British import

This 1993 Mini Rover is the upgraded Mayfair edition

-

England isn’t the only place where cars are equipped with their steering wheels on the right side of the cockpit. Ditto for Japan, which brings us to the Pick of the Day, a 1993 Mini Rover originally sold in Japan but now being offered on ClassicCars.com by its private owner in Hurricane, West Virginia.

1993 Mini Rover

“This Mayfair edition sports a larger engine, and better factory options than your standard Mini,” the seller notes. “Unlike the UK examples, which are typically higher mileage with more corrosion, this one has no major rust because it comes from the land of the Rising Sun. It has been imported from Japan.

“The paint has been very well-maintained and has no notable blemishes. The body is straight and well preserved. The interior is what you would expect from a car with such low miles. Extremely clean and very little wear and signs of use.

“The dash is quite modern compared to the original design and has A/C, vents, a radio, and even a small glovebox. The steering wheel is larger and grippier than an older Mini. The seats and door panels are in the same condition, showing little wear. Note: there is a small hole the size of a pea on the driver’s seat bottom.

“The neat thing about the Mayfair is that it comes with more interior storage in the form of door pockets, and two additional vented rear windows to aid air circulation.”

The seller adds that the suspension “is in good condition and does not rattle or squeak. The car handles incredibly well.

“Mechanically, the desirable 1275 engine starts right up and drives very well. The 1.3L mill whirs to life, and is a nice upgrade over the standard 998cc motor. Unlike most carbureted Minis, this car actually features Electronic Fuel Injection, so cold starts are easier and there is no need for a manual choke.”

The car has an automatic transmission, and “no known mechanical issues save for a minor oil leak, which are common on these older Coopers.”

The seller wants $12,000 for the car. To view this listing on ClassicCars.com, see Pick of the Day.
