The annual Goodwood Revival in the UK, one of the world’s leading celebrations of vintage racing, was canceled for 2020 like so many other gatherings because of the coronavirus pandemic. Goodwood is planning an event for October, however, what it’s calling “the first and only ever” Goodwood SpeedWeek, combining elements of the Revival, Festival of Speed. and Members’ Meeting. Visit the Goodwood website for more information.
Meanwhile, the Video of the Day is from the 2005 Revival, the Brooklands Trophy race in which 90-year-old race cars do battle. This particular event came down to a lengthy and exciting close-action duel between a classic Alfa Romeo P3 and a little Riley, its extreme lightness helping it to keep up with the bigger, more-powerful Alfa, and trying to pass it at the slightest opportunity.
The other vintage cars on the track are just as stunning, with a few more Alfas, a gaggle of Bugattis and other intriguing antiques, including a tiny but totally cool Austin 7 racer. You see those others as the Alfa P3 and the Riley fight their way through slower traffic. The speeds on the spindly wheels and skinny tires are impressively fast.
So while Goodwood Revival was silent this year, here’s a slice of excitement from the past. Oh, and who won the Alfa/Riley duel for the checkered flag? You’ll have to watch to find out.
