Ferrari Special Projects car goes to auction for the first time

-

For the first time, and at RM Sotheby’s upcoming Paris auction, a car by Ferrari’s Special Projects division will be offered for public sale instead of going to a customer who worked with Ferrari designers on the car, in this case a 2011 Ferrari SP30, chassis 188026.

“Based on a 599 GTO chassis and drivetrain, the bodywork is completely unique to this car,” Bonhams said in its news release.

The coachwork is “defined by the 599 XX style rear winglets and speedster humps at the rear. Utilizing 458 Italia headlights and 599 tail lights, the car’s silhouette is clearly reminiscent of other front-engine, twelve-cylinder Ferraris.

“Boasting unique wheels, the scalloped bonnet most certainly inspired designers of the F12tdf,” the announcement continued.

“Presented in virtually as-new condition, the SP30 has barely, if ever, seen the open road, showing less than 110 km on its odometer.

“Representing the ultimate manifestation of the wildest automotive desires of its first and only owner, the SP30 offered in Paris is the first Ferrari Special Projects car to be offered for sale to the public.

RM Sotheby’s did not provide a pre-sale estimated value for the car produced by the Special Projects division, which previously worked with individual customers who have been Ferrari’s “best clients” and who select a current-production chassis and drivetrain and then work with Ferrari designers to “turn their dreams into realities.”

RM Sotheby’s noted that around 40 such cars have been created under that format to date.

“Our offering of the Ferrari SP30 is an unprecedented opportunity to acquire something truly unique,” Augustin Sabatié-Garat, RM Sotheby’s European auction manager, was quoted in the news release.

“The SP30 is an incredible example of the lost art of modern coachbuilding, and an important piece of Ferrari history that is reminiscent of the one-offs from the legendary Enzo-era”

RM Sotheby’s suggested that the SP30 is part of a “built the ultimate supercar garage” docket for the Paris auction as it joins a lineup that includes a McLaren F1 and CLK GTR, Ferrari Enzo, 599 SA Aperta, F12tdf, a Porsche 918 Spyder and a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport.

Also on the docket is a recently restored 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/6C alloy-bodied Berlinetta, a 1959 BMW 507 Series II and a 1970 Ferrari Dino 246 GT.

The full auction catalog is available for viewing online.
