Sly Fox 1984 Ford Mustang SVO

-

One of the continuing trends at the recent Barrett-Jackson Northeast auction was the interest in Fox-bodied Ford Mustangs. I have never been a huge fan of this generation pony car, but there is one outlier among the many different versions that’s something special: Mustang SVO.

The SVO, which was introduced in 1984 and designed to give Mustang more of a European flavor. The SVO featured stiffer springs and suspension bushings, Koni shocks, special bodywork, and 16-inch wheels, and for the first time on a Mustang, four-wheel disk brakes.

But the biggest difference was the engine, a turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-4. It was supplied with 14 PSI of boots via a AiReasearch turbocharger, which made for 175 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque and the capability of propelling the lightweight coupe to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds, with quarter-mile time of 15.8 seconds, both strong numbers for 1984.

Later year SVOs featured 15 PSI of boost along with some engine modifications, which gave them SVO 200 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque.

The Pick of the Day is a first-year 1984 Ford Mustang SVO that has covered only 39,800 miles from new and is a completely original example, according to the Phoenix, Arizona, private seller advertising the car on ClassicCars.com.

The seller calls this car absolutely flawless, and extremely well-preserved and well-maintained throughout its life. The car is painted in Dark Charcoal that is factory original, the seller says.

Every switch and detail works perfectly, the seller adds and this SVO somehow still has its perfect original interior with its original Hurst shifter, working hand-pump air bladders for the seats, and even tool for adjusting the shocks in the glove box.

The Mustang just received a service and brand new tires, the seller says, and it includes the original owner’s manuals, shop manuals, car cover and an SVO car model.

These cars are the most interesting Fox-body Mustangs ever built, with the possible exception of the ultra-rare 1993 Cobra R. With an asking price of only $19,900 it looks to be an excellent buy.
