This week, RM Sotheby’s is manning a stand at Techno-Classica, the big collector car showcase taking place in Essen, Germany, where the auction house is showcasing the 1992 Benetton F1 car that it will offer for sale at its upcoming Monaco sale alongside several cars it is handling for sale by private treaty.
But RM Sotheby’s announced Wednesday that it will be back at Essen in 2019 with much more than a stand; it will be back with a docket of some 150 collector cars and motorcycles for its inaugural Essen auction.
“We are continuously looking to expand our presence in Europe, and the addition of the Essen sale is a chance for RM Sotheby’s to become even more involved with an exciting and prosperous collector car market,” Maarten ten Holder, the company’s executive vice president and head of European sales, was quoted in the company’s news release.
Ten Holder added that RM already has a staff of German-speaking car specialists and looks to welcome both those experienced in collector car auctions and those “looking to bid at auction for the first time.”
“The collector car market in Germany is recognized by RM Sotheby’s as especially strong,” the company said in its news release, adding that the new sale in Germany joins the RM Sotheby’s auction calendar that already includes Paris, Monaco, Villa Erba (Italy) and London sales.
Techno-Classica Essen drew more than 1,250 exhibitors from more than 30 countries in 2017, filling more than 20 exhibit halls. The showcase of collector cars included displays by 20 automobile manufacturers and drew around 185,000 visitors to the Messe Essen exhibition center, including members of more than 200 classic car clubs.
The auction is scheduled for April 11, 2019, the second day of the 31st Techno-Classica Essen show.
