James Cottingham didn’t have much experience driving Phil Hylander’s Porsche 904, but it didn’t show as Cottingham stormed to victory in the new Ronnie Hoare Trophy race at the 76th Goodwood Members Meeting this past weekend in England.
Cottingham started from the pol, but fell back at the start on a wet track. He passed a Ferrari 275 GTB/C and a Morgan Plus 4 SLR as the field descended on St. Mary’s for the second time and had opened his lead to a full second by the ensuing lap.
The new Hoare Trophy was named for Maranello Concessionaires founder, Col. Ronnie Hoare, who launched his Ferrari dealership in 1960 and also represented the marque in motorsports, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

HSR season opens at Sebring
The 2018 Historic Sportscar Racing season opened this past week in conjunction with the 66th running of the 12 Hours of Sebring race. HSR staged doubleheaders featuring Historic and Vintage classes each of two days.
In the opening sprint Wednesday, Rokket Horton won overall and Historic honors in a 2001 Porsche 996 GT3 Cup car with Scott Tyler taking the Vintage class in a 1967 Porsche 911 RSR.
Thursday, Russell Gee, driving the oldest car on the track, his 1963 Jaguar E-type, led the Vintage class while Henri Sicotte took overall and Historic honors in his 2010 Chevrolet Camaro GT.R.
HSR’s next outing is the 41st annual Classic Motorsports Mitty, April 26-29 at Road Atlanta.
Quartet of Mario’s rides to be featured in Phoenix
As part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the last race victory of Mario Andretti’s Indycar career, four cars he drove will be featured at the Phoenix Grand Prix weekend, April 6-7 at ISM Raceway (nee Phoenix International Raceway). The cars will be those Andretti drove in 1966 (Dean Van Lines Brawner Hawk-Ford), 1967 (Dean Van Lines Brawner Hawk-Ford, 1988 (Newman/Haas Lola-Chevrolet) and 1993 (Kmart/Texaco Havoline Lola-Ford Cosworth XB).
Several drivers who raced against Andretti in his 1993 victory also will be at the track for a weekend that includes the Vintage Desert Classic, with various vintage Indy cars turning laps around the Phoenix track.
In honor of the 1993 anniversary, the featured musical entertainment for the weekend will be the Spin Doctors, a popular group from the early 1990s.
‘Racing Colours’ available in paperback
Simon Owens was only 49 years old when he died, but he’d become an established artist — musician, lyricist, songwriter and visual artist — who worked from watercolors into computer-generated digital art, specializing in motorsports subjects. Among his projects was a series of computer-generated images of cars and their colorful liveries.
Nearly 80 of those images, each accompanied by a quote from a legendary racer, were compiled in a book that is now available in paperback.
“Along with these beautiful and unique artworks, this book represents a chance to gain a rare peek into the artist’s working methods, revealing some of his developmental work and showing how the digital images were constructed,” according to the news release about Racing Colours: Motor Racing Compositions 1908-2009 from Veloce Publishing.
“Simon’s work is a visual feast for lovers of automotive art and motorsport,” the publisher added of the book that retails for $24.95.
