Sparkling 1958 Buick Special Riviera

-

Chrome was king with the Detroit Big 3 in 1958, with cars from that transitional model year slathered with the shiny stuff in yards. Even the 1958 Corvette found itself with extra chrome-plated bling.

The Pick of the Day is a perfect example of General Motors’ affection for chrome, a 1958 Buick Special Riviera that gleams and glints everywhere the sun hits it. This one has been extensively refurbished mechanically and cosmetically, and tastefully lowered to accentuate its mighty form.

The car has been lowered for a sleeker profile

The two-door hardtop is powered by a 364cid Buick Nailhead V8 that has been completely rebuilt with a 30-over bore plus new Carter four-barrel carburetor, starter, generator, belts and hoses, according to the Bailey, Colorado, private seller advertising the car on ClassicCars.com.

The Buick is described as a “solid Colorado car” that has been bare-metal resprayed in Canyon Dusk Copper and Satin Black roof with all stainless-steel bits removed and polished. The interior was redone in black and white rolls and pleats, the seller says.

The suspension has been lowered with new shocks and springs, three inches up front and two inches in the rear, giving the classic Buick a hunkered look for eye-catching cruises. All work on the car was done in the past year, and it has been driven just 28 miles since completion.

The interior has been completely redone

“The car was painted this year. The interior was custom made a month ago, and the engine was built two months ago,” the seller says in the listing.

Loads of chrome were used by Buick to create that massive grille, bumpers, side trim, roof trim and those monumental tailfins that reach for the sky. The slight lowering gives the car a custom look, although from the photos with the ad, it appears otherwise to be largely in stock fettle.

This distinctive Buick from a shinier era is priced at a reasonable $22,000.
