Drew’s 1961 Chevrolet Corvette

-

Back in 1974, my friend Butch had a 1961 Corvette. It was a 283/230 HP with both tops. I believe he was the second owner.

He decided he wanted to do a full restoration on the vehicle. So, we proceeded to remove the body, strip it to bare glass, and have the frame sandblasted before Priming the inside and out in “Zinc Chromate” primer, and finishing it in Black Imron. All suspension components were replaced. New brake lines, fuel lines, body mounts etc.

Making progress

The engine was punched out to 301, with all new components, including a dual four set up.

Fast forward to 2016. Earlier in the year, Butch’s wife Dolly pasted away. Butch developed series health issues and moved to Texas with his oldest son.

Butch’s youngest son called me one day and said he was executor to Butch’s estate, and wanted me to do an appraisal on the Corvette. He said I was the only one that new the entire history of the vehicle. I sent the appraisal.

About six weeks later, I received another call from from him, asking me if I was interested in the Corvette. I said absolutely.

’61 Vette is a work in progress

In early October 2016, I received the Corvette. It was exactly as I remembered it, only 42 years later!

I re-started the restoration process. Front disc brakes were added, Mustang II front suspension, and an Ididit steering column.

I want the classic look, but with modern upgrades to enhance performance and handling. And, the restoration continues.

You just never know when or how the next Corvette comes into your life.
