The 3-on-the-tree manual transmission is long gone, but there are some folks that can still drive one.
So dear readers, have you driven a 3-on-the-tree?
Give us your take in the comments section below. Like my high school history teacher always told me, “There are no wrong answers.”
My take? Not yet
I drove my pharmacist’s ’51 Studebaker on deliveries at 15, without a lesson or license. I drove my ‘grandfather’s ’51 Nash a little later, and a ’57 Chevy in high school. All had three on the tree. Big deal. It was what was available, and did the job.
yes I have driven heaps of the here in New Zealand-Holdens Falcons etc
but I think that car in the photo is 4 on the tree,a Merc 300 of the 1950s cheers John
Drove a 1977 Chevrolet Sportvan with a 250 I-6 and three on the tree. Lived in Brooklyn, NY so lots of stop and go traffic and parallel parking. Our garage was in the rear of our property and the driveway between our house and the neighbors; it was so tight we had to remove the right side mirror on the van to get it in and out. Never gave much thought to driving it though none of my buddies ever drove one.
Yes, 49 Ford when I was 14.
Yes, I presently have my own little forest of five vehicles that have three-on-a-tree….1948 Plymouth Woodie, 1949 Plymouth Convertible, 1951 Ford Panel Van, 1952 Kaiser Traveler and 1957 Nash Rambler. All come with a factory anti-theft devise, a clutch!
