Anyone who was a fan of the hit ‘80s television show Magnum P.I., will recognize this car right away. Tom Selleck’s character, Thomas Magnum, sped around Hawaii chasing down bad guys while driving a red Ferrari 308 like the one advertised by a Lebanon, Tennessee, dealer on ClasscCars.com.
It’s hard to decide who was the real star of the show — Selleck or the Ferrari — but I’ll leave that up to you.
The Pick of the Day is a two-owner 1982 Ferrari 308 GTSi with only 19,175 miles driven and a fresh belt service.
Designed by Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fioravanti, one of Ferrari’s most celebrated designers, this wedge-shaped, Targa-topped Spider is built on a tubular steel space frame. The body features iconic Ferrari circular taillights, deep vents, and pop-up headlights.
“Body gaps are Ferrari factory perfect,” says the dealer. “Hood has a perfect fit, as does the back decklid.”
Not much detail is provided about the engine, but we know Ferrari gave these 1982 GTSis a 2.9-liter fuel-injected V8 that was factory rated at 214 horsepower and mated to a 5-speed dog-leg manual.
Ferrari introduced Bosch fuel injection in the GTSi models so the 308 could comply with new emission regulations introduced in the early 1980s.
“The car drives like a 19,175 mile freshly serviced GTSi,” the dealer notes. “Very tight, responsive, without shimmy, shake, or extra sounds other than a tight Ferrari V8 engine.”
These GTSis are a whole lot of fun to drive but can take a lot of work to maintain, especially the timing belts that need to be replaced every few years. Luckily, this one was a recent recipient of a complete timing belt service, so you can drive and enjoy it right away.
“One can discern from photographs that the leather and carpets are in excellent condition, as are the door cards,” says the dealer.
The asking price is $69,800, and while Haggerty’s valuation tool shows the value of an excellent condition GTSi at $40,000, recent sales reflect prices in the mid-$60,000 range and higher.
