My Classic Car: 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air

A show car still in the family

I bought a 1955 Chevrolet 2-door hard top from a customer at my dad’s gas station. It was green with Nova bucket seats and a Corvette 283 engine. I was 20 years old and teaching myself to paint at the time. I took off all the chrome and started doing the body work, but I had just taken a job with the railroad. Life kind of got in the way. I wasn’t home much, bought a Harley and a 4×4, so I wasn’t working on the Bel Air a lot. One of my younger brothers came by one day (he was driving a Corvair Spyder), looked at it and said, “Darryl, sell me the 55.” I responded that it was now his.

Darryl’s Bel Air at car shows

This pushed me to finally finish the paint job: black Imron with flames. Now that the Bel Air was his, he took it to events and even won several car shows. In 1982 we went to the street rod nationals in LA, and this Bel Air ended up in five different hot rod magazines. He still has the car, and I have to look at it every time I go to his house. I would like to have it back now, along with the 1969 ‘Vette roadster, 1965 Olds 442, 1940 Ford Coupe, to name a few.
