Pick of the Day: 1981 Buick Regal, a street-legal NASCAR tribute

A chance to commute like Darrell Waltrip

-

Current NASCAR stock cars aren’t really stock anymore, beyond the car wrap with proper logos, headlights and all the rest. NASCAR is decades away from those halcyon days when fans knew exactly what make and model their favorite driver was wheeling on Sunday. Next month NASCAR starts the 2023 season and fans need sharp, discerning eyes to differentiate between the Mustangs, Camaros, and Camrys on the track. From afar they all look the same.

Winning on Sunday and selling on Monday is long gone, but for those NASCAR fans that like true stock cars there is an option and you can drive it to work.

The Pick of the Day is a 1981 Buick Regal street-legal NASCAR tribute listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a dealer in Lavergne, Tennessee. (Click the link to view the listing)

“This 1981 Buick Regal is a road-legal tribute built to Darrell Waltrip’s #11 Mountain Dew NASCAR racer,” the listing states. “And while the uprated V8 and rumbling exhaust give it stock car racer fun, this also remains comfortable with an overdrive transmission and plush interior. So it’s built to be a driver, and there’s no better way to turn heads everywhere you go.”

It has the proper look of an entrant in the Winston Cup Series with the accurate green and white Mountain Dew livery with every conceivable sponsorship decal from the early 1980s. Hood pins, headlight covers, windshield reinforcements, and a functional window net have been installed to maintain an authentic image. The attention to detail is clear.

This is a NASCAR tribute but maintains a mostly stock interior with an upgraded AM/FM/cassette stereo with CD changer, a tilt steering column, and Buick’s plush seats. To give it a racecar vibe the front seats have M&R racing harnesses, a roll bar was installed, and an extra wide rear-view mirror helps you keep an eye on closing traffic.
