My Classic Car: Dodge Dart connects three generations of family

Editor’s Note: This post was originally posted on July 6, 2018 for a Father’s Day story series. However, we think it’s a perfect example of how generations can connect with cars, and we want to share that with you this holiday season.

What started out as just a new car purchase ended up being a family treasure.

My wife, Mary Anne, and I purchased our 1969 Dodge Dart GT convertible from my uncle at Burton Motors in Belvidere, Illinois on April 6, 1969.

We are now in our 49th year enjoying our Dart. As I worked on the car over the years, our daughter and son assisted and learned. My son helped with many major projects and countless small ones.

In between the major projects was your basic day-to-day maintenance. We were always tinkering and cleaning.

Both our daughter and son learned to drive in the Dart. Now, their children love to go for a ride with Grammie and Poppie when they are in town.

For our 50th anniversary, my wife and I are taking the Dart on the Hot Rod Power Tour, but more specifically the MoPoweredTour portion.

The Dart needed a new carburetor before the tour. I enlisted help from my 8-year-old grandson so this old Dart has now been wrenched by three generations.

Our Dart continues to generate new memories everyday.
