Go off-road in the new Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato

Reminiscent of the Lancia Stratos

If you have ever wanted to take a Lamborghini supercar on an off-road adventure (and who hasn’t, quite frankly), your only option is the Urus SUV. Yes, the Urus is a capable SUV yet lacks the panache of an exotic coupe, so Lamborghini now offers the Huracán Sterrato, which could be described as a supercar with beefier tires and a lift kit. Or, perhaps, it’s a modern reinterpretation of the Lancia Stratos.

Lamborghini officially unveiled the Huracán Sterrato and described it as “the first super sports car designed for maximum driving pleasure even away from the asphalt on loose or dirt surfaces, reinterpreting the very concept of sportiness and emphasizing the brand principles of brave, authentic and unexpected.”

Bumpy trails and other bottoming-out hurdles are made easier due to increasing ground clearance by 44 mm (1.7 inches) compared to the Huracán EVO. Suspension travel is greater too, and the track widths were also bumped up — the front by 30 mm (1.2 inches) and the rear by 34 mm (1.3 inches). It rides on 19-inch rims wrapped in custom-engineered Bridgestone Dueler AT002 tires, 235/40 R19 at the front and 285/40 R19 at the rear; run-flat technology that allows the Lambo to go 80 km (49 miles) at 80 kph with zero pressure. Hopefully you can find a shop that carries Lamborghini tires within that distance.

To aid this supercar from the punishment of off-road adventures, Lamborghini utilizes aluminum front underbody protection and reinforced sills. To show off its newfound adventurous spirit, the rear diffuser and the sturdy wheel arches are beefier and more pronounced. The air intake located on the rear hood is designed to help supply the engine with clean air when motoring through the dusty roads.

“The Sterrato is testimony to how the Lamborghini design DNA works perfectly even with unexpected proportions,” says Mitja Borkert, Lamborghini Head of Design. “The Sterrato’s design translates its super sports car heritage into a new lifeform, reflecting its specific intent to deliver a truly unique and fun driving experience.”

As a proper Lamborghini (albeit one with off-road tires), the Huracán Sterrato features a potent 5.2-liter V10 engine that produces a factory-rated 601 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 413 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an electronically controlled all-wheel drive system featuring a rear mechanical self-locking differential. As expected, the Sterrato is quick: 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) comes in 3.4 seconds, with a top speed of 260 km/h (about 160 mph).

“With the high-speed all-terrain concept of the Sterrato, we have uniquely combined the driving experience of a true super sports car and the fun of driving a rally car,” says Rouven Mohr, Lamborghini Chief Technical Officer.

The interior is pure Lamborghini, as opposed to the spartan nature of a Jeep Wrangler, with Alcantara Verde Sterrato upholstery. The Human Machine Interface (HMI) features a digital inclinometer with pitch and roll indicator, compass, geographic coordinate indicator and steering angle indicator. If you own an Apple Watch and want to measure the visceral impression of driving a Sterrato, you can synchronize your heart rate information with the car’s telemetry system to measure your driving performance.

The Sterrato is limited to 1,499 units, with production beginning in February 2023. Pricing details and all the rest are not available yet.
