Pick of the Day: 1974 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

T-Top Corvette with a complete restoration

-

In some cases, a quality restoration can result in “better than new” condition for a vehicle. Whenever a collector intends to keep a car forever, a spare-no-expense rebuild is usually the strategy of choice.

The Pick of the Day is a 1974 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Mason, Michigan. (Click the link to view the listing)

“We have owned this car for over thirty years with no intention of ever selling our classic cars,” the listing begins. “This ’74 T-top Corvette has had a complete restoration over the years.”

The listing later provides additional detail on the nature of the restoration, which was completed in 2016 at a cost of $16,000. “We had the Corvette stripped down to the frame, all panels were removed, stripped, and sanded down. Any imperfections found were repaired at that time and reassembled. Every seam was straight as an arrow.” The resulting look provided body lines and paint finishes that the seller calls “better than when it came off the assembly line.” Improvements extended to the cockpit, where new carpeting and floor mats were added.

The third-generation, or C3, Corvette debuted in 1968 with styling modeled after the Mako Shark II concept car. The design was penned by Larry Shinoda and originally called for a mid-mounted engine – an engineering aspect that was later abandoned in favor of a traditional front-mounted layout.

Exterior attributes for the C3 were advanced for their time, including vacuum-operated quad pop-up headlights, hideaway windshield wipers, flush-mounted door handles, and functional fender vents. By the mid-1970s, the car had undergone cosmetic updates, and the chrome bumpers had been removed in favor of urethane color-matched bumpers. The seller notes that 1974 was the only year that the rear bumper was made of two individual pieces as opposed to a single unit.

Under the hood resides a V8 that was rebuilt in 1997 and has accrued fewer than 10,000 miles since refurbishment. It received annual oil changes in the nearly 25 years since that time and sends power rearward through a console-shifted automatic transmission.

This Corvette was clearly given the royal treatment when it came to restoration. Unfortunately for the seller, priorities have shifted due to health issues and the time has come to pass this Stingray on to its next home.

The seller is asking $32,000 for this C3 and its accompanying folder of records.
