“You can set my truck on fire and roll it down a hill, and I still wouldn’t trade you for a Coupe DeVille.” Those lyrics come to mind from the 1994 hit country song “Pickup Man” by Joe Diffie. While Joe clearly preferred a pickup truck over a car, there are still plenty of people who would probably have it the other way around.

The Pick of the Day is a 1955 Cadillac Coupe DeVille listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Sacramento, California.

“Beautiful 1955 Coupe DeVille,” the listing states. “Car is ready for the road. Weekend cruiser or daily driver.” Imagine daily driving this car! It screams 1950s status, and originally carried a retail price of $4,305 which comes out to $47,677 in today’s dollars.

First, a little education on nomenclature. The Coupe DeVille was in fact a high-end trim level of the Series 62 model. This example comes from the fourth generation which was launched in 1954 and rode on the General Motors C-body platform. The Coupe DeVille badge was applied to the luxury hardtop model.

Design for this big coupe was penned by Harley Earl, a man credited by many as the inventor of tailfins and other iconic styling elements of the 1950s. His influence is shown in this Series 62 which exhibits a long, low silhouette along with fins that were reminiscent of aircraft. Earl retired in 1958 but his influence forever changed American automotive design. The seller states that the paint and chrome are in good condition on this Caddy.

The listing omits details about engine specifications, but this car would have come factory-equipped with a 331cid OHV V8 mated to a four-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. Mechanical work has been kept up according to the seller and includes a rebuilt carburetor, a new aluminum radiator, a new thermostat, a recent oil change, and a tune-up.

The spacious interior affords comfortable seating for six – a rare find for any two-door coupe. Interior features on the Series 62 were advanced for its time: some of these came with Cadillac’s “Autronic Eye” headlight dimming feature and power windows were standard equipment.

“I have too many cars and have to sell or I would keep her,” the listing concludes.

As long as you’re not a “Pickup Man” like Joe Diffie, maybe this Coupe DeVille needs to make its way into your garage. The seller is asking $27,500 for this luxo-coupe.
