Pick of the Day: 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente convertible

Jon Favreau will always be Mike from “Swingers”. I wish I could update my association with the highly successful writer, director and actor, but my introduction to him was in the 1996 comedy. No amount of Happy Hogan appearances has altered that perception, and this is another instance of my tendency to live in the 1990s. That said, if you haven’t seen “Swingers,” I highly recommend it. Favreau wrote it, and it gives you a good idea of how tough it can be to chase your dream job.

The Pick of the Day is a 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente convertible used in the Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn movie “Swingers”. It’s listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a dealer in Murrieta, California. (Click the link to view the listing)

“This is the actual picture car that was used in the 1996 movie ‘Swingers’ starring Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau,” the listing states.

“Swingers” is Favreau’s semi-autobiographical story of trying to make it in Hollywood, and the Comet was his car during that time of being perpetually broke and hustling to make it as an entertainer. The Comet is rough around the edges but has some nice amenities like front bucket seats, power steering, power brakes and a glovebox-mounted aftermarket stereo. The stereo is a good opportunity to play the movie’s soundtrack and reminisce about that brief era when Big Bad Voodoo Daddy was popular.

“This Comet is sporting its original burgundy color,” the listing states. “This is the first year for the Comet Caliente model with the Lincoln-inspired front grill. Very original Comet with patina and character for days. Very stylish for 1964 and still holds your eye today going down the road.”

This F-code Comet is powered by a 260ci V8 engine, and the original 3-on-the-tree set up has been reconfigured to a floor-shifted three-speed manual transmission.

The dealer is asking $18,000, and the car’s provenance is backed up by letters of identification and authentication, studio parking pass, and maintenance records and receipts.
