One of the coolest and desirable pony cars of the 1960s are Shelby Mustangs. The GT350, GT500, and GT500KR are the stuff of legend. When new Shelby Mustangs offered a level of performance, in both handling and speed, that was difficult to match for the price.
Over the last 50 years these cars have consistently increased in value and a classic Shelby Mustang today, even the 1968 and later cars, start around $80,000 and go up in price from there.
The problems of a classic Shelby Mustang, when compared to modern cars, are that they ride poorly, are less than civilized, and are slow by modern standards.
There is an option for those of us that love the idea of a classic Shelby Mustang but want something more civilized and a bit less expensive. A 2007 Ford Mustang Shelby GT checks both of those boxes.
The Shelby GT is a real Shelby-built car that was sent from Ford to the Shelby American headquarters in Las Vegas for modification and final assembly. There was also a 500 series for the 2006 model year with Shelby GT-H cars supplied to Hertz, but Shelby also worked their magic on a car that you could buy new at your local Ford dealership.
Changes to the Shelby over a standard Mustang GT include the addition of the Ford Racing Power Pack that featured a 90mm cold-air intake system, performance engine management system, Ford Racing Performance mufflers with an X-pipe, used in place of the H-shaped crossover. With those additions the Shelby GT had a factory-rated 319 horsepower and 330 lb-feet of torque.
The suspension was modified with Ford Racing struts and shocks, stiffer anti-roll bars and a twin-tube strut tower brace. Those upgrades lowered a Shelby GT’s ride height by an inch. The rear end was swapped for a new one with a 3.55:1 ratio.
