AutoHunter Spotlight: 1954 Chrysler Windsor Deluxe

Dignified motoring for those who love hats

-

There once was a cigar-chompin’ guy named K.T. Keller who ran the Chrysler Corporation. One of his criteria was the “hat test” where a dignified member of society should be able to wear a hat inside a Chrysler product. This 1954 Chrysler Windsor Deluxe featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is the last of those Mopars. It’s powered by a Spitfire 6 engine backed by a manual transmission. Featuring a gray cloth interior, this black Chrysler is being auctioned by a private individual and comes with a clear California title in the seller’s name.

The exterior has been repainted black, but the door jambs retain the original factory-applied finish. Features include bumpers with accessory over-riders front and rear, left- and right-hand chrome mirrors, and reverse lights. The seller notes the bumpers, grille, door handles and hood ornament all have been rechromed.

The front bench seat, rear seat and door panels have been reupholstered, with the seller stating the original upholstery can still be found underneath. The interior also features include new black carpeting with black rubber floor mats, and new gray carpeting and fabric the trunk compartment. The seller notes that the lights (including turn signals and glove box light), cigar lighter and heater are all in working order, but the original radio is not functional. Windows are lowered by manual cranks.

Lead Writer Diego Rosenberg is a native of Wilmington, Delaware and Princeton, New Jersey, giving him plenty of exposure to the charms of Carlisle and Englishtown. Though his first love is Citroen, he fell for muscle cars after being seduced by 1950s finned flyers—in fact, he’s written two books on American muscle. But please don’t think there is a strong American bias because foreign weirdness is never far from his heart. With a penchant for underground music from the 1960-70s, Diego and his family reside in the Southwest.

  1. Windows were actually manually cranked in 1954? What will they think of next? I do like the feature of being able to wear a hat, really I do. Maybe a fedora, a white Panama, or even a baseball cap today.
