Hot rods and bright color combinations go hand-in-hand, and sometimes a collector car hits the marketplace that is so eye-catching it deserves a deeper look.
The Pick of the Day is a 1939 Ford two-door sedan listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Crowley, Texas. (Click the link to view the listing)
This resto-mod sedan is dressed in a colorful baby blue exterior over an orange and cream interior — even the face of the dash and the steering column are painted in vivid orange. The listing describes the build in greater detail: “Finished in light blue over a cream and orange interior… the exterior features a split grille with horizontal vanes, front fender vents, a one-piece mirror, teardrop taillights, and a third brake light.”
The seller has owned the vehicle for four-years and commissioned the installation of the aforementioned interior that conveys the custom color scheme all the way from the headliner on down. Treatment includes orange piping on the seats, orange lap belts, and even an orange shifter boot. The contrasting black carpeting gives a little bit of relief from all the eye candy.
Luckily this 1939 Ford has some go, to accompany all that show, and momentum comes from a replacement 350cid V8 along with a rebuilt three-speed automatic Turbo 350 transmission. The drivetrain has accrued just 2,000 miles since installation, and the rest of the chassis is reportedly equally fresh according to the listing. Front disc brakes and a set of smoothed wheels give a modern touch to this hot rod.
Statistically, car colors have become more neutral over the years. According to independent data shared on Reddit about car color distribution by production year, the vast majority – over 70% — of cars produced in the modern day are black, gray, or white. It’s no wonder the automobile has begun to look and feel more like an appliance from a catalog than a form of self-expression.
Some bright colors are making a comeback. When the latest BMW M3 launched in 2021, it was made available in “Isle of Man Green” – a shade reminiscent of some of the forest green metallics that were prevalent about 25 years ago in the late 1990s. But whether orange and cream ever make their way to the interior of a production car is yet to be seen.
