This being my birthday, it’s only fair that the Pick of the Day should be focused on me, with a car that I’d really like to have and hold and drive around, without consideration of its price tag. I’ll bypass all the million-dollar Ferraris and such, though, and place on my wish list this 1970 Porsche 911S coupe.
Now that would make me a happy birthday boy. This was the sweet spot of the first-gen 911, a 200-horsepower sports coupe with a high-revving engine and still retaining the “long-hood” styling of the original design, before Uncle Sam stepped in with impact bumpers.
Porsche had lengthened the wheelbase of the 911 by about 2½ inches in 1969 to mitigate some of the dramatic oversteer that could be encountered by incautious drivers in earlier models. The higher-performance S models were fitted with mechanical fuel injection, which this one would have.
This Porsche looks to be in immaculate condition, with a rebuilt matching-numbers 2.2-liter flat-6 engine that “runs phenomenally,” according to the Costa Mesa, California dealer advertising this 911S on ClassicCars.com.
“This 911S has gone through an extensive documented restoration with records going back 30 years,” the ad notes. “Exceptional condition inside and out!
“Finished in the original color combination Burgundy with Black interior. The paintwork is beautiful with excellent gaps and panel fit. The interior is simply beautiful with rare factory black-leather Sport seats and houndstooth inserts, the door pockets are perfect along with the headliner and new carpets. An excellent solid and rust-free example.”
The dealer, a restoration and sales company that is well known in the Porsche community, sings the praises of the 911S performance: “There is plenty of horsepower with a smooth-shifting manual 901-dogleg 5-speed transmission and four-wheel disc brakes.”
“Complete with Certificate of Authenticity, owner’s manual, tool kit, jack, spare tire and spare key,” the seller adds. “A rare opportunity to own and experience a highly sought-after 2.2L 911S long hood that is a blast to drive!”
Rare indeed, and the values of these special Porsches have flown up in recent years. This 911S, therefore, seems fairly priced at $169,500. Which also seems about right for a thoughtful birthday present.
