Pick of the Day: It just looks like a flying car

At first glance of its aircraft-style fuselage, you might think the Pick of the Day is a flying car. It’s not. It’s a 1989 Pulse Autocycle, of which a reported 347 were produced in the late ’80s by the Owosso Motor Car Company in the midsection of Michigan.

They were the work of aircraft designer Jim Bede, and the first couple dozen were called Litestars. 

This one is being advertised on ClassicCars.com by its private owner, in Holt, Missouri, who reports that the fiberglass body fits over a steel tube-frame chassis. 

Autocycles.org says such vehicles are GCRVs, short for ground cruising recreational vehicle, and are sort of long-wheelbase (123 inches) motorcycles with a pair of outrigger wheels for balance. “It is classified in most states as a 3-wheel motorcycle,” that website reports.

“The exceptionally long wheelbase provides unmatched stability and driving comfort for a vehicle of its weight, class and fuel economy,” the website continues. “It seats two (tandem) and has almost six (6) cubic feet of storage space.”

Access to the cockpit, which has a heater and AM/FM/CB radio, is through a sliding canopy.  

Power for this particular Pulse, the 327th built, comes from a 1,1820cc Honda GL1200 Gold Wing motorcycle flat-4 engine and has a 5-speed manual gearbox. (The standard engine was a 1,100cc Honda 4.)

The front wheel measures 13 inches in diameter while the rear is 15. The outriggers have 8-inch trailer wheels. 

“Braking is handled by hydraulic discs at both ends, and adjustable shock absorbers were added by the owner,” the seller notes.

The seller adds that a custom-built trailer, which has never been used, is part of the sale. 

The asking price is $35,000.
