Usually, when somebody sets out to redo and update something like a pre-war Pontiac, the result is a performance-laden street rod packed with V8 power and ready to race.
But the Pick of the Day is something completely different, a 1936 Pontiac convertible that has been custom built not for fast acceleration but for reliable drivability with modernized brakes, steering, electrical system and a 6-cylinder Chevy engine with automatic transmission.
The Pontiac comes across as an attractive resto-mod all set up for city or highway driving, with an understated vintage look and a comfortable-looking interior.
“The current owner has enjoyed this car for almost 10 years and is ready for it to go to a new home,” says the dealer advertising the Pontiac on ClassicCars.com. “According to the owner, the car was ‘gone through’ about 8 years ago and upgraded to a 12-volt electric system. Also, a Mustang II front suspension and power brakes were added.
“Walking around this ’36, one should notice the gloss-blue paint that is offset nicely with the tan convertible top. Adding to the curb appeal would be the chrome bumpers, butterfly opening hood, creme-colored wheels with chrome baby-moon hubcaps and chrome handles.”
The Pontiac’s interior is upholstered in tan leather, the seller notes, with what looks like a stock steering wheel and gauges. The convertible top appears to be in good shape.
The engine is a 250cid straight-6, the dealer notes, linked with a Turbo 350 3-speed automatic transmission.
“The owner claims that the drivetrain was rebuilt in 2014 and an estimated 30k miles have been driven since,” the seller notes.
The interesting factory styling of the two-seat Pontiac includes a unique grille treatment with parallel chrome bars in the center that continue over the length of the hood. The short-wheelbase convertible looks trim and appears to be in very clean condition.
The asking price for this cruisin’ Pontiac is $33,000.
