A 1927 Mercedes-Benz Model K owned by Michael and Joannie Rich was selected October 24 as Best of Show at the 2021 Greenwich Concours d’Elegance, an event now owned and staged by Hagerty, the specialty insurance provider and automotive lifestyle company.
“The car world has a belief system. And the belief system is that certain cars are just super important, deserving of celebration and recognition,” McKeel Hagerty was quoted in the post-concours news release. “The Mercedes-Benz Model K selected as best in show represents that greatness – one that the judges recognized following significant deliberation..”
The “K” in the car’s model designation is short for kurzer radstand, which in German means “short wheelbase.” The car, built on a 120-inch chassis, was equipped with a Mercedes 6.2-liter 6-cylinder engine, but with a larger supercharger and was capable of speeds of more than 90 mph.
The Best of Show winner originally was owned by William Sloan of Rochester, New York, who had Fleetwood craft the coachwork after seeing a Fleetwood-bodied Isotta Fraschini roadster owned by Rudolph Valentino.
Ooof, that’s a gorgeous car.
