The Quail, a garden party for the automotive set

Fine food, fashion and amazing cars are featured at A Motorsports Gathering

“I went to a garden party

To reminisce with my old friends

A chance to share old memories

And play our songs again

When I got to the garden party

They all knew my name”

Those words are the opening lyrics to Ricky Nelson’s 1972 hit record, Garden Party. But they apply quite well to the scene Friday at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, an event hosted for the 18th time by Gordon McCall and Peninsula Signature Events at The Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley.

Yes, the event is another of the car shows held during Monterey Car Week. But it also is a garden party for those interested in cars. People dress up for the event and in addition to seeing the amazing array of automobiles, they enjoy an array of fine food and wine.

Perhaps more so than any other event during Monterey Car Week, The Quail is where people gather to reminisce with old friends and to share old memories. And especially so this year, since The Quail, like the rest of Monterey Car Week 2020, was canceled by the pandemic.

Yes, you can meet old friends at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, but by the end of the day, a lot of new people likely will know your name as well — and will look forward to greeting you again the following year.

To quote Ricky Nelson one more time:

“People came from miles around, everyone was there.”

My personal favorite corporate display was by the new owners of Meyers Manx dune buggies
A display of ‘The Great Ferraris’ included this 1949 166 MM Touring Barchetta
This 1952 Ferrari 342 America Speciale Cabriolet by Vignale is one of six but the only one with Vignale coachwork

Cars of Curiosity was a category at The Quail that featured some unusual vehicles, such as this 1957 Fiat 600 Eden Roc built by Pininfarina for Henry Ford II
This 1992 Monteverdi HAI 650 FI gets its F1 initials because it was built on the Onxy-Monteverdi F1 chassis and is powered by an 11,000-rpm Cosworth DFR V8
How could you help but be curious about why this 1994 Honda Acty Crawler has tank-style tread on its rear wheels

  1. Larry,
Love the Quail article. But please ask the guy who wrote the captions to add an E to Bruce MEyers name. Otherwise he or she will never get out of that sand trap. But maybe that’s par for the course. LOL
