Vintage stock cars featured at Redman races at Road America

Think road racing is new for NASCAR? Cup cars raced on 14-turn Wisconsin track back in the mid-‘50s

Vintage stock cars were featured this past weekend at the WeatherTech International Challenge with Brian Redman races at the Road America circuit in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

“This is a fantastic event,” said Redman, the former US Formula 5000 and IMSA Camel GT champion who has been a driver or event grand marshal at the track since 1972. “Without question, Road America has turned into the finest road racing facility in North America.”

Although known for its sports car racing history, the 14-turn Road America course was the site of a race for NASCAR’s top series, then known as the Grand National, in August 1956. With the checkered flag flying as rain fell, Tim Flock won the race in a Mercury over a field that included Lee Petty, Junior Johnson, Buck Baker, Fireball Roberts and other stars of the era.

NASCAR’s Xfinity series has been racing at the track since 2010.

At the vintage races this past weekend, Gunnar Jeannette drove a Chevrolet Impala to victory ahead of Scott Holley’s Dodge Intrepid and Brad Dahmer’s Chevrolet Chevelle in the race for Historic Stock Cars.
