Fiat designer Dante Giacosa launched the first Fiat 500 in July 1957. With to its tiny structure, the Cinquecento quickly gained popularity throughout Europe as they easily zipped along those narrow city streets.
The first Fiat 500 released in 1957 was just over 9 feet long and powered by a 479cid two-cylinder engine that put out a whopping 13 horsepower and reached a top speed of 53 miles per hour. The cars were equipped with rear-hinged doors, sometimes called suicide doors, canvass fold-back sunroofs and weighed in at just 1,036 pounds empty.
Production on the 500s ended in 1975 but decades later, in 2007, Fiat brought the 500 back to life; they were an instant hit and won the European Vehicle of the Year award in 2008.
The Pick of the Day is one of those small yet mighty 1972 Fiat 500R, which underwent a “fresh rotisserie restoration completed by a renowned micro-car expert located just north of Modena, Italy,” says the dealer advertising the car on ClassicCars.com.
The R in its name stands for Rinnovaa, or renewed in English, which signifies the final edition of the original Fiat 500 models produced from 1972-75.
“After an extensive search, this completely original, very low mileage, rust/accident-free Fiat was located on the streets of Italy,” the dealer says. “Being a true 34,000km (22,000 mile) vehicle made this Fiat the ideal restoration candidate.”
During its restoration, the dealer states, the Fiat was completely disassembled and “meticulously restored using all OEM parts.”
“The Fiat is completely original right down to the tire jack and tool kit.”
Powering the car is a 594cc 2-cyl engine paired to a 4-speed manual housed in a fully detailed engine compartment at the rear, according to the dealer.
Finished in its Blu Scuro, or Dark Blue in English, the Fiat features a red interior with black piping. A wood-and-chrome luggage rack has been added that pairs nicely with a vintage Italian suitcase that comes with the sale.
The dealer is asking $24,900 for this Fiat 500R.
