$250 Tesla Tequila sold out in a day

‘Teslaquila’ finally makes it to market under its new name ‘Tesla Tequila’

-

Last week, Tesla launched its long-awaited tequila brand, and to no one’s surprise, it’s already sold out.

As an April Fools’ Day joke back in 2018, Tesla founder Elon Musk tweeted that “Despite intense efforts to raise money including a last-ditch mass sale of Easter Eggs, we are sad to report that Tesla has gone completely and totally bankrupt. So bankrupt, you can’t believe it.”

Followed the tweet was a picture of Musk “passed out against a Tesla Model 3, surrounded by ‘Teslaquilla’ bottles, the tracks of dried tears still visible on his cheeks.” And don’t forget about the carboard poster held by Musk that read, “Bankwupt!”

Shortly after, Tesla applied to trademark “Teslaquila” and teased a product mock-up. This announcement was met with some backlash from Mexico’s Tequila Regulatory Council, saying that since the name ‘Teslaquila’ elicits tequila, Tesla will have to adhere to the strict tequila manufacturing guidelines.

“If (Tesla) wants to make Teslaquila viable as a tequila, it would have to associate itself with an authorized tequila producer, comply with certain standards and request authorization from Mexico’s Industrial Property Institute,” the CRT said in a statement. “Otherwise, it would be making unauthorized use of the denomination of origin for tequila.”

Despite the backlash, “Teslaquila” was relaunched under the new name of “Tesla Tequila” on November 5 for $250 a bottle.

According to the Tesla Tequila site, the tequila is “an exclusive, small-batch premium 100% de agave tequila añejo made from sustainably sourced highland and lowland agaves. Aged for 15 months in French oak barrels and into a hand-blown glass bottle, Tesla Tequila features a dry fruit and light vanilla nose with a balanced cinnamon pepper finish.”

This sipping tequila comes in a unique lightning-bolt bottle placed in a metal stand.

Tesla Tequila sold out in one day, but it looks like they’ll be releasing more product as the website states that it’s only temporarily out of stock.
