Remember Ford Fiesta ST? Wait to you see the new version Europe gets

Adjustable coil-over suspension and lightweight wheels enhance hot-hatch’s handling

-

After driving the Ford Fiesta ST back in 2014, Bob Golfen called it “a surprisingly sophisticated little hot rod.” I was in agreement after I drove one the following year.

Of course, as part of its move to kill off compact cars and family sedans, Ford discontinued sales of the Fiesta in the US automotive marketplace after the 2019 model year. But not in Europe. In fact, European customers are getting a new special-edition Fiesta ST with adjustable coil-over suspension and lightweight, 18-inch, flow-formed aluminum alloy wheels to enhance handling.

This new Fiesta ST Edition also gets a Sport drive mode switch on the steering wheel, carbon-effect interior trim, projector puddle lamps, special badging and a special Azura Blue paint and blue stitching on the seats. The cars also get rear diffusers and roof spoilers.

Only 500 units will be produced, with 300 offered in the UK and the others to customers on the European continent. The cars are priced at £27,075 ($35,125).

“Our new Fiesta ST Edition squeezes even more excitement out of the best-handling compact hot-hatch on the road,” Stefan Muenzinger, Ford Performance manager for Europe, is quoted in the announcement.

“The Edition model puts drivers firmly in control with the ability to manually adjust the feel of their car and fine-tune the handling to suit their personal preference.”

Ford said the changes to the car’s suspension system will enable customization of “cornering, road-holding and ride-height characteristics for true performance driving enthusiasts” and that the ST Edition will be “the most rewarding, agile and confident Fiesta driving experience yet.”

Ford added that the car was developed at the Nürburgring in Germany. Standard ride height is lowered but can be adjusted to driver preference. The suspension also features a dozen bump settings and 16 rebound settings for fine tuning.

The special 10-spoke alloy wheels reduce weight at each corner by nearly 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds).

The red Sport-mode button on the steering wheel

Each Fiesta ST also is equipped with a Quaife limited-slip differential for enhanced front-end traction and cornering grip, special steering components and high-performance braking systems with 10.9-inch vented front discs.

Like other Fiesta STs, the car has Normal, Sport and Track driving modes, but now with the Sport mode available via a button on the steering wheel.

Power is provided by a turbocharged 1.5-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine that provides 200 horsepower and nearly 215 pound-feet of torque at 1,600 rpm. Ford says the cars will sprint to 62 mph in 6.5 seconds with a top speed of 143 mph.

If the cars sound cool, you only have to wait 25 years before you can import one privately to the United States.

  1. Absolutely loved the nitrous blue on the rs focus now very similar colour on the fiesta st edition, shame it’s not all over the roof, spoiler etc. It also needs an option of silver colour wheels instead of to much black for me to want to buy one plus if it doesn’t come with a spare wheel I would never buy a car without one. Other than that it’s a fantastic looking car and although it’s got a yaris gr as a quick rival I would buy the Ford because of the colour alone if it was all over but not until then.
