Mustang passes its parent in popularity with collector car shoppers

’67 Mustang tops one ClassicCars.com search list and surges past Ford in another

-

There was a new twist in the Ford vs. Chevy rivalry when it came to cars being searched during the month June on the ClassicCars.com marketplace.

That twist was a Ford vs. Ford rivalry in which all-years Mustangs overtook all-years Ford in one of the two search lists. Oh, by the way, that all-years search list again was dominated by all-years Chevrolet.

Except for a couple of months when the Volkswagen Bus popped to the top, the all-years search list has had Chevrolet at No. 1 and Ford at No. 2. But in June, Mustang overtook its parent brand, albeit by only 378 searches.

Mustangs also were strong in the other search list, the one in which people search by year, make and model. For the third month in a row, the 1967 Mustang topped that list, and it wasn’t alone. Mustangs claimed 7 of the top 13 positions, the ’67 joined by the 1969, 1968, 1965, 1967 Shelby GT500, the 1966 and the 1987-93 Fox body.

“In 1967, the look of the Mustang was less a ‘secretary’s car’ and more muscle and sport in appearance,” noted ClassicCars.com Journal managing editor Tom Stahler. “The Fastback, as it starred in Bullitt, remains an iconic look. With an available Cobra-Jet big-block, this car was king of the road. Re-designed in 1969, the Mach 1’s were certifiable classics. No wonder Ford is resurrecting the moniker for 2021.”

Second on the year-make-model search list was the 1967 Chevrolet Impala. Interesting to note was that while the only other Chevys in the top-10 were the ’64 Impala and ’69 Camaro, various Chevys took 9 of the 11 places from 15 through 25.

Noteworthy, also, was the Chevrolet Chevelle climbing into the top-10 in all-year searches.

Another seemingly significant trend is the emergence of the vintage 4×4 utility vehicle. As Ford prepares to unveil its reborn Bronco, all-years Broncos surged to 7th place from outside the top010, and all-years Willys Jeep was 8th, with the International Scout, Jeep and the Jeep CJ-7 also among the top-20 in the all-years listing.
