On roadways that are clogged today by minivans and crossovers, here’s one family hauler with the heart of a hot rod that will stand out against the masses.  A set of American Racing mag wheels are a subtle exterior upgrade that set aside this 1968 Chevrolet Caprice station wagon as something special, but the feature content goes much deeper than that.

The Pick of the Day is a 1968 Chevrolet Caprice Estate Wagon offered on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Greenwood, Indiana. Driven just 85,000 miles, it’s a California car since new and still wears its black plates.

“It runs and drives great and is ready to hit the road pulling your favorite hot rod, muscle car, boat, or whatever else you may want to tow in style,” according to the ad.

The Caprice name itself initially came to life in Chevy’s lineup in 1965 when it launched as an upper-trim level for the Impala four-door hardtop.  But starting in 1966, the Caprice became a separate model as the brand’s top full-size car.  It was available in three body styles that included a station wagon, a four-door hardtop, and a two-door hardtop.

The Caprice received model updates in 1967 and again in 1968, including a new grille, taillights set into the bumper and optional hidden headlamps.  There were eight engines and three transmissions available – a glimpse at how customizable cars in the 1960s were.

This Caprice’s 327 cid small-block V8 is engineered to provide sparkling performance while maintaining its smooth manners for hauling around passengers in comfort.  As seen in the photo gallery, this Caprice has its original black vinyl interior, which appears to be in great condition.  The seller is asking $28,000 for this apparently well-preserved machine.

“This is a rare and cool wagon that turns heads wherever you go with it,” the seller says. “It’s a means for an automotive enthusiast to transport a family without sacrificing V8 rumble and performance.  Now is the chance to add some stylish woodgrain paneling to your own garage, and leave the minivan to the neighbors.”

  1. I like seeing those old caprices out there since I own a 1989 caprice Brougham LS and I’m with that muscle car rumble in an old chevy sedan or in this case a station wagon with that 3rd seat in the back they are way more easier on the eyes than a minivan.

  2. I used to own a impala version of this car, 327 with a 2 speed power glide. Didn’t have Ac , but that rear tailgate window would go down and we had a super good breeze. Our old hound dog sure liked to ride in this as it had lots of room. comfortable car.

  3. Tyson, I have a 1992 Honda Civic that still looks like it did when I bought it brand new. This car has a fantastic. Never had a problem with anything on the car. It is a VX and still gets 55 MPG. That is better than many of the hybrids. It is in Phoenix.

  4. I am working on a family memoir and my aunt drove what I thought was a 1968 Chevy Malibu station wagon
it was pale yellow with wood siding. Did this model come in pale yellow?

I see the 1969 Chevrolet Malibu Concourse Estate station wagon came in yellow with wood siding.
