You love the look of the vintage ’69 Mustang Mach I and Boss 302 with louvers covering their sloping, sports-roof backlights. But now you’re all grown up and drive a big F-150 pickup truck.
Nonetheless, you can at least make your full-size pickup look something like those beloved Mustangs with the Aero X pickup bed cap developed by Michigan Vehicle Solutions, an automotive supplier and aftermarket product producer in Southgate, Michigan.
Aero X takes the look of those louvered Mustangs and applies it to the F-150, with benefits not only of protecting what’s in the truck bed, according to Michigan Vehicle Solutions, but with enhanced aerodynamic efficiency for the truck itself.
“The Design Team’s dedicated mission was to reinvent the truck bed cap as it is known today,” the company says on its website.
“Unconstrained by the normal design and engineering protocols, the end result is purely spectacular with many innovations and built in features. Close inspection of the Aero X will reveal smooth rounded finished edges, expertly finished surfaces, and OEM level paint finishes.
“Exact mold tolerances enable us to perfect our surfaces and create a finished product with interior surfaces just as beautiful as its exterior surfaces. Under the Aero X’s skin are the very best composite materials and components available in the industry today.”
Michigan Vehicle Solutions says the design enhances fuel economy, that the louvers provide sun protection without hindering rear visibility, and note that there’s an LED interior dome light and an integrated high-mounted exterior brake light. The company says its water management system prevents leakage and that the fiberglass truck cap installs with standard clamps and without modification to the truck bed.
It also offers several options, including a rear spoiler, vented side glass, a tilting front slider window for easy cleaning and integrated audio speakers for an enhanced tailgating experience.
At the moment, the bed cap is available for 2015-current year Ford F-150 pickup trucks with 5 1/2 foot or 6 1/2 foot beds, but similar caps for Chevrolet, Ram, Toyota and Nissan pickups are in development.
MVS, which unveiled the Aero X at the 2018 SEMA Show, provides testing and other services to the original-equipment automakers and also does custom vehicle builds and conversions.
