Vintage Vettes top Mecum’s Chicago sale

A pair of ’60s Chevrolet Corvettes and a classic Cadillac convertible led the results for Mecum Auctions’ three-day Chicago sale this past weekend, with a total of $12.6 million (not including auction fees) and 72 percent of the 795 vehicles offered hammering sold.

Attendance was strong at the Schaumburg Convention Center, according to a Mecum news release, with special attention dedicated to the Chicago Blackhawks hockey team; the Blackhawks’ tenor soloist Jim Cornelison performed the National Anthem to open the auction on Friday.

The ’57 Cadillac Eldorado convertible was given some extra muscle

A 1967 Corvette 427 convertible, an NCRS Top Flight winner, was the top seller at $115,000 (Mecum results do not include buyer fees), and a 1963 Corvette split-window coupe was hammered at $110,000.

The Cadillac was a desirable 1957 Eldorado Biarritz convertible, which also sold for $110,000. Gorgeously restored in metallic green with a matching green interior, the Eldorado is powered by a later 472cid Cadillac V8.

A trio of modern collector cars followed: a 2017 Ford F150 Shelby Super Snake pickup powered be a 750-horsepower supercharged V8 selling for $100,000, a 2010 Bentley Continental GT Speed convertible at $96,000 and a 2011 Audi R8 Spyder at $95,000.

3. 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz convertible at $110,000
4. 2017 Ford F150 Shelby Super Snake pickup at $100,000
5. 2010 Bentley Continental GT Speed convertible at $96,000
6. 2011 Audi R8 Spyder at $95,000
7. 1957 Chevrolet Corvette convertible at $85,000
8. 1967 Chevrolet Camaro at $78,000
9. 1987 Porsche 911 Turbo at $78,000
10. 1961 Chevrolet Corvette convertible at $77,500
